As Many As 600,000 Illegal Aliens May Be Registered To Vote In Texas

  A recent check by the Texas Secretary of State’s office indicates that 600,000 registered voters do not  have a valid driver’s license or state issued identification card.  In Texas, identification is not required to register to vote but due to a bill just passed by the Texas Legislature, valid identification may be required at the polls to vote if Senate Bill 14 is cleared by the justice department. As many as a quarter of voters in some small Texas counties might not be able to cast ballots if the federal government allows the new state voter ID law to go into effect. One concern is that undocumented immigrants have registered to vote in Texas.  Since no identification is required to register to vote , undocumented immigrants could register.  In prior years, no id was required at the polls so it is possible that many non-citizens could have registered to vote and illegally cast ballots.  Texas does not issue drivers licenses to illegal immigrants so many without identification could be turned away at the polls.  Senator Fraser’s bill requires voters to show a valid government-issued photo ID — such as a Texas driver’s license, Department of Public Safety identification card, state concealed handgun license, U.S. military ID or U.S. passport — to vote in elections. “Republicans are using cheap tricks to steal elections,” said Rebecca Acuña, spokeswoman for the Texas Democratic Party. “In certain counties, Republicans could disenfranchise a quarter of the voters currently participating in elections.” http://www.statesman.com/news/texas-politics/data-show-texas-voters-could-be-barred-under-1902244.html?cxtype=ynews_rss http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/pamphlets/largepamp.shtml

    Voter I.D. is needed to make sure we have fair, legal elections.

    the statement that Republicans are using cheap tricks to steal elections is one of the dumbest accusations I have ever heard…there is plenty of time to get an id card if you are legal…otherwise if you aren’t legal you have no right to vote…As a matter of fact, you shouldn’t be here period..

    You must be a Citizen to vote. It is a privledge not a “gimme”. For centuries women who WERE natural born AMERICAN citizens could not cast a ballot in this country; and now Illegal Immigrants, who have unlawfully entered this country have the nerve to register to vote, want to have a say?
    Texas has the right idea. No Valid ID, No vote, No kidding!

    Hope the Feds will allow Texas to have their Law on voting. However, with the DOJ & zero to name 2, there will be little hope. As zero is countring on all the illegals to vote for him. In FL we have to show pit drivers license or valid phote ID issued by the State to be able to vote. Should be this way in all States. Only fair way to have an honest election, unlike 2008!

    It is not likely to be overturned as the SCOTUS in April 2008 already ruled the Indiana law, (the law our Texas law was modeled after), IS CONSTITUTIONAL by a 6-3 margin. SCOTUS rarely reverses their position unless something really really big happens.

    But honestly, why would any citizen in America want their legal vote invalidated by the ILLEGAL vote of someone else? The law is not about partisanship. It’s about legal vs. illegal. Voting is a right only granted to legal citizens of this nation who are not otherwise prohibited to vote for other reasons.

    I have had to show my Drivers License at the polls here in SC for years. It has never bothered me, and I think it is a commons sense way to insure all voters are qualified to vote. The only question I have is what about those who are legal residents on visa? Cant they get drivers licenses? What is to keep these non-citizens from voting? I think Texas has done a great service for protecting it citizens and this country’s electoral process.

    Requiring an ID to vote is a “cheap trick”? Is this a joke? I am fed up with politicians who want to give illegals more rights than what legal citizens have! We have to show ID even to buy a bottle of paint thinner! There is no such a thing as a “right to vote” in federal elections, and certainly not for someone who is in the country illegally If Mrs. Acu~a finds this offensive, please send her back to Mexico for a few years. Since she is an American citizen,she will be treated as a non-citizen, and she can come back and tell us just how well Mexico treated her.

    Just had a vote in Albuquerque where you could vote in any district. To make this work an ID was required for poll workers to look you up on the computer. This is a great way to force use of an ID.

    Rebecca A—Did you fall down and smack your little head on one of our tax-payer funded sidewalks? If individuals are NOT LEGAL US CITIZENS—then how is requiring I.D. (proof) a cheap trick, regrding the vote? Isn’t it the other way around dear?     I need an ID to open a bank account, rent an apartment, drive a car, get a library card to check out a book, get a loan, cross a international border, check into a motel, scuba dive, fly a plane, purchase alcohol or cigarettes, join Costco or Sams wholesale club, visit the White House, adopt a pet from a shelter… but not to vote.
    Yeah… makes perfect sense to me.

    Did Texas swing for Obama with its Electoral vote? Cannot believe so. If not, even 600,000 illegals did not sway that one line on the ballot. Of course, all other votes that day would have been affected. Even one ILLEGAL individual voting perverts the process. Yet the bulls**t always flies to defend anything assisting such “voting” to fly under the radar. Disgusting we even descent to arguing this open and shut matter.

    Keith, I’m not really sure what the point of this link is. Can you clarify. While illegal aliens clearly are not entitled to register to vote in Texas, there are no safe guards to keep them from doing so.

    It says that the bill has to be cleared by the Justice Dep’t. I doubt if the criminals that run our current Justice Dep’t. will approve it. It would take away a lot of votes for their party.

    Brenda, you’re almost right. I don’t care how much taxes ILLEGALS pay. If they’re in this country illegally, they should NEVER have the right to vote. I only say this because sometimes, the illegals use a person who has a right to work to collect their pay, so, in reality, they do pay taxes and S.S. The LEGAL worker will get a check for xx amount which equals pay for everyone, and the employer will take the taxes out.

    The state does not need the permission of the federal government to pass their laws. The state is sovereign. Texas needs to just pass the law and not worry about what the feds say. The feds would never approve of this – Texas legislators should know this!
