Fight Over Muslim Headgear Breaks Out At Amusement Park

Muslims Demonstrate at Amusement Park

Fifteen people were arrested Tuesday at e Playland Amusement Park in Rye, N.Y, The Journal News of Westchester, N.Y. reports.

The Muslim American Society of New York had arranged the trip to Playland Park in Rye, which was expected to bring some 3,000 people to the site from New York City, as well as surrounding suburbs like Yonkers and parts of Long Island.

Members of the Muslim group began scuffling with park security officers; the police were called, the fight grew to 30 to 40 people, and, according to several witnesses, many Muslim visitors were hit, pushed to the ground, arrested, and handcuffed. All in all, two people were charged with felony assault,

A number of them flew into a violent rage when told that, due to safety rules, women had to remove their flowing head scarves or hijabs before going on certain rides — including the Catch-a-Wave ride, the Crazy Mouse roller coaster and the Dragon Coaster, according to news reports describing a violent melee involving Muslims fighting police, security personnel, and each other. It prompted a large police response — at least 60 police cruisers from nine agencies, along with a police helicopter circling overhead, according to The Journal News, a local Gannett newspaper offering the best coverage of the melee.

Dena Meawad said of the initial confrontation. ‘It’s clear, this all happened because we’re Muslim.’
