The Supreme Court may hear a case on tuition breaks for illegal immigrants.
California has a policy of granting lower in state college tuition to illegal immigrants.
But there is a 1996 Federal law that bars states from giving any post secondary tuition benefits to those not lawfully present in United States.
If the Supreme Court were to overrule the California law, the decision would affect 11 other states among them New York, Texas, and Maryland.
And the Federal law forbids the state’s giving “preferential treatment” to ” illegal immigrants” on the basis of residency.
California says that more than 41,000 illegal immigrants qualify for lower tuition. Most of them attend community colleges.
